Garvan is implementing a new strategic plan “Garvan 2030: Discoveries to Impact” and Garvan’s Commercial Development and Innovation (CDI) team is central to delivering Garvan’s vision of global leadership in discoveries to impact.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Director, IP and Commercialisation, the Commercialisation Manager will work as part of the CDI team to identify, protect, develop, and commercialise Garvan’s IP, proactively facilitating the transfer of these technologies into use via partnerships with industry, licenses to industry, clinical and other collaborators, or spin-out ventures.
The successful candidate will assist in all areas of CDI activity with particular responsibility for:
  • Developing strong relationships with Garvan research groups to identify Garvan IP
  • Managing Garvan IP through CDI’s innovation process
  • Supporting associated negotiations and legal documentation
  • Supporting the development of commercialisation briefs
  • Assisting in the development of commercialisation grant applications
  • Supporting CDI’s education programs
  • Supporting CDI’s business development activities with external partners.
Salary: Up to $150,000 P/A + 10.5% Super + Salary Packaging

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Commercialisation Manager is expected to work with a high degree of independence and autonomy in the determination of priorities and work standards.
The key responsibilities of the Commercialisation Manager include:
  • Lead the preparation and assessment of Garvan IP disclosures using a defined analytical framework
  • Coordinate related commercial intelligence gathering activities for the purpose of determining market opportunity, competitor landscape, health economic data and product-market fit for selected Garvan IP disclosures
  • Contribute to identifying, initiating and progressing discussions with industry partners on key Garvan innovations, including the coordination of events with industry involvement
  • Work closely with Garvan legal team to identify and make recommendations for consideration on key legal agreement clauses in relation to Garvan IP and commercialisation
  • Work closely with Garvan Research Services team to assist in the preparation of grant applications that relate to Garvan IP and commercialisation
  • Assist in CDI activities that promote awareness of research translation, commercialisation and real impact within Garvan, including the preparation of educational material and assisting in the running of events
  • Other duties as assigned.
ABOUT YOU
The key skills and experience of the Commercialisation Manager will include:
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a scientific discipline relevant to Garvan’s strategic programs, preferably at a doctoral level
  • The ability to fully comprehend and communicate Garvan’s main research stream of the ‘omics’ sciences as they apply to precision medicine in oncology, immunology, and other acute and chronic diseases
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a relevant industry sector or business development role
  • Experience in developing strong relationships with researchers
  • Possess a strong curiosity about new, early stage technologies
  • Working knowledge of the processes associated with protecting IP
  • Working knowledge of the law as it relates to research translation and commercialisation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively about opportunities for the commercial development of IP and ideas
  • Proven team player.
Highly desired:
  • RTTP Qualification (Registered Technology Transfer Professional)
  • Experience in identifying and commercialising IP in an industry and/or academic environment.
