The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The Team
The AEC operates using a three-tier business structure, consisting of a National Office, State/Territory Offices, and Divisional Offices. The State/Territory Offices ensure that Business As Usual (BAU) and election deliverables are met for their jurisdiction.
The Event Recruitment and Management Team sits with in the Event Workforce Optimisation Taskforce (EWOT). Each team is located within their respective State Office to manage the recruitment and delivery of the Event Workforce, which includes surge and the Temporary Election Workforce (TEW).
The Event Recruitment and Management Team will implement a nationally consistent workforce attraction model locally and follow one set of nationally uniform policies, processes, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The Opportunities
There are three opportunities available:
- Workforce Lead South Australia / Tasmania: this role is based in our Adelaide State Office and is responsible for the event workforce requirements for both South Australia and Tasmania.
- Workforce Lead Victoria: this role is based in our Melbourne State Office and is responsible for the event workforce requirements for Victoria.
- Workforce Lead NSW/ACT: this role is based in our Sydney State Office and is responsible for the event workforce requirements for New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
The Workforce Lead coordinates the delivery of surge and TEW staffing within the State and as part of the State Operations Branch. The role includes delivering quality outcomes in relation to recruitment, contract management for engaging labour hire personnel and placement services, and TEW training for the State/Territory. Workforce Leads will collaborate where workforce needs are greater in a particular jurisdiction during electoral event periods and support each other via a peer network. The Workforce Lead is located in each jurisdiction and forms part of the peer network.
A key aspect of the opportunity is implementing a nationally consistent approach to the management, reporting and visibility of election workforce staffing for the State/Territory in close collaboration with the peer network, People Branch and the Event Workforce Optimisation Taskforce.
The Workforce will lead a small team to ensure high quality outputs, and the effective delivery of election workforce staffing including recruitment, onboarding and training using a range of recruitment methods such as Labour Hire, Secondments and Registrations of Interest (ROIs).
Using your Human Resource (HR) skills and people experience, you will manage a small team of staff to monitor and manage timelines, milestones, and key contractual staffing deliverables. You will analyse complex data and develop accurate and high-quality reports and information regarding event workforce sourcing and allocations.
To excel you’ll have:
- Demonstrated experience in Human Resources (HR) and recruitment processes across a range of recruitment methods.
- Proven ability in the effective management, reporting and delivery of large-scale recruitment projects, run on time and within budget in a highly operational and legislated environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and empower staff while developing capabilities and encouraging career development.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to anticipate stakeholder needs and manage expectations across a geographically dispersed network.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to propose and facilitate change that contributes to business improvement strategies in line with relevant policy and legislative frameworks.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in human resources or similar (desirable).
Additional responsibilities during an Electoral Event
- Ensure team is responding to increased volume of enquiries and issues during an electoral event.
- Provide additional reports on staffing and training data during the Writ-to-Writ period.
- Ability to remain positive and respond to pressure in a calm manner, while committing energy and drive to see that goals are achieved.
- Confidence and ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and negotiate with team members, business areas and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
- A demonstrated ability to work autonomously and a strong commitment to working harmoniously within a team to achieve positive results and support the AEC’s strategic direction.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
